The History of Mt. Carmel

Mt. Carmel Baptist Church was founded in 1896. The Reverend H. P. Saupton, one of the founders, chose the name "Mount Carmel" from the Bible (I Kings 18:19). The first church building, a frame structure, was built on a small parcel of land at the corner of NW 5th Avenue and 6th Street in Gainesville, FL. On the fourth Sunday of May 1944, the members assembled at this location and marched down 5th Avenue to the church's new location on 5th Avenue and 4th Street. Sunday, March 18, 1984, members again marched to a new church building, this one the existing home of Mount Carmel Baptist Church at the corner of NE 25th Street and 8th Avenue. The church has a long rich history of moving forward, building, improving the community, enhancing the lives of our members and neighbors.
